is it ever mentioned in canon how karkat's ectobiology is more complicated than john's? is it not just that the beta trolls are actual clones of the alpha trolls?

The beta trolls are not clones of the alpha trolls. Karkat created 24 trolls during his ectobiology. Trolls are usually conceived when the Mother Grub combines adult troll reproductive liquids and then lays many eggs all at once. Karkat may have had to do a similar process but with paradox slime for 24 people.

Karkat created 24 paradox clones consisting of his group and Meenah’s group. They were then sent back through the portals, twelve would become ancestors and twelve would become Karkat and his friends.
Do they have to die on the quest bed or does their corpse have to end up on it

Either one. Jade died and was placed on her quest bed shortly afterwards and she still ascended.

There are three kinds of bad sessions: null sessions, dead sessions, and void sessions. An example of a void session is the Alpha kid’s session. A void session is when nothing is prototyped pre entry. This means the battlefield cannot evolve and grow and the session will go on forever because the Black and White king’s war will be an eternal stalemate.
How did Glubglub (Fef's Lusus) die?

Feferi’s lusus was implied to have been killed by a meteor after she released the Vast Glub. She then fell into Feferi’s kernel sprite and was prototyped.

Either Jade or Bec but it was most likely Bec since a young Jade probably couldn’t have brought herself to stuff her own grandfather.
