Could the Cherubs initiate a scratch if they wanted

A scratch is basically switching the meteors that go through the portals and resetting the game. Since the cherubs were hatched this kind of scratch wouldn’t work.

How is John's dad alive? Is it because John went back in time and changed a bunch of stuff, and if so, what did he change for Dad to live?
