Okay so I think you explained it already but I'm still confused. Chronologically, which trolls were first and who grew up to be the ancestors (like Mindfang)?
Karkat’s group were created first and then their genetic material was mixed to create Meenah’s group. Post-scratch on Alternia it was Meenah’s group who grew up to be the ancestors. That’s why Vriska called Aranea a “dorky teen mindfang”.
why can only either the Lief ring or the Void ring be present at a time? was there a reason given for why when one is found the other disappears?

There is a theory that they’re actually the same ring but other than speculation we haven’t seen a canon reason why one disappears when the other comes up.
What does the Void Ring do? And what would happen if both rings were to be in the same place at the same time?
