That’s actually not a time loop. Nannasprite wrote the message in a copy of the book and it was the one John was sent back with. John being Poppop in the Alpha Timeline it became a family heirloom and was held in the arms of his stuffed corpse which is where Jane got it from. 

I’m sure he wonders why he made it every night when he is in tears thinking about how he desperately wants it to end it but the story has taken on a mind of it’s own and has consumed him and he can’t escape..
