hey i'm gonna submit this from my homestuck blog because i feel it helps! none of the kids are called by their names, but only by their handles, until they're officially introduced! hussie writes little notes on the bottom of the pages in the actual, printed homestuck volumes - i don't have the books so i can't tell you the page number, but it's in there! (you can also check on the search page if you're skeptical) :) !

i need to ask this because it bugs the hell outta me; did john EVER call karkat kar?
Nope! I just went on the MSPA search function, and I looked up “Kar” and the only thing I found was the actual word “Karkat” from John. Hope this helps!
