John may be named for James Dallas Egbert III, a student at Michigan State University who was incorrectly alleged to have disappeared into the school’s steam tunnels for reasons related to the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). Though, you’d have to ask Cuttlefish, the user who originally named him on the MSPA forum here.

I remember when homestuck went on hiatus we were like, “Oh yeah, a bunch of people are going to be rereading Homestuck and we’ll get a bunch of new forgotten facts!”

Actually, most (or not all) of the Beforan trolls weren't named by Hussie either! They were suggestions in the name suggestion box for their dancestors.
